Malaga Airport expansion, to be in service by the summer .

There are three projects involveing three buildings: the new car park, the new General Aviation terminal and the Security and Services Centre. The car park is the project that most affects normal airport users. The work has led to frequent congestion at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso terminal building, despite the fact that several months ago the airport added two provisional free parking areas with a complimentary shuttle service to and from the terminal.

The new central car park has seven levels covering a total of 70,000 square metres, of which two underground levels have already been in use since last summer. The project will cost 130 million euros and will provide users with 2,500 new parking spaces.

As far as the new General Aviation building is concerned, this is located near the existing one, to the south of the airport close to the MA-21 (old N-340). The project involves giving the old building its original 1940s appearance ready for its new role: to house the airport museum. Aena the Spanish airports authority expects the new building, which covers almost 3,500 square metres over three floors, will be open by July.

The General Aviation terminal building is used by private jets, the air taxi service, flying schools, etc. and the new premises will boast levels of quality and comfort that are practically unrivalled in Europe. Some four million euros have been spent on the construction work carried out by Ferrovial Agroman.

The other project is the Security and Services Centre. This 2.4 million euro building will house offices and facilities that are currently distributed around the airport complex, such as the Guardia Civil station, the private security firm’s headquarters, the crisis room and the Airport Security Centre (CSA).

Other Projects have already been finished.

The aircraft platform, two sidings for waiting aircraft, the General Aviation platform, the aeronautical activities area, the diversion of the Bores Romero aqueduct.

Other project are due to start in 2007.

Work is due to start this summer on a second runway and the Local trains: The underground stretch of the Malaga-Fuengirola “Cercanías” line and the underground station inside the airport. Cost: 157 million euros.
